He first came through as an off-spinner who could bat. Lad saw his batting talent and moved him up the order, and the timing and ease against the fast bowlers that later made him a world-class opener were already visible in his school and Mumbai age-group cricket.

A boy who started out as an off-spinner went on to score the highest individual total in ODI history.264 v Sri Lanka, Eden Gardens, 2014

Rohit Sharma as Captain

Rohit took over India’s white-ball captaincy in late 2021 and Test captaincy in early 2022. His time in charge was defined by fearless cricket and unbeaten runs in global events. India won ten matches in a row at the 2023 ODI World Cup, were unbeaten on the way to the 2024 T20 World Cup title, and won the 2025 Champions Trophy in Dubai.

In October 2025, Shubman Gill replaced him as ODI captain as the team prepared for the 2027 World Cup. Rohit stayed in the side as a specialist opener.

Batting Style and Strengths

  • Timing: He plays shots with very little effort and is rarely seen hurrying a stroke.
  • The pull and hook: One of the best in the world against short balls, and the main reason for his huge six tally.
  • Converting starts: Once set, he can turn a fifty into a double hundred.
  • Powerplay hitting: His fast starts give India the platform to chase huge totals.

Rohit in the IPL

Rohit started in the IPL with Deccan Chargers and won the 2009 title there. He then moved to Mumbai Indians in 2011 and captained them to five titles (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020), making him the most successful captain in IPL history. He has scored more than 7,000 IPL runs.

Latest Form and the 2027 World Cup

Rohit retired from T20Is in 2024 and from Tests in 2025, and now plays only ODIs. His 2026 has been strong: a century at Lord’s in July and 225 runs in the home series against the West Indies, which included a 101 off 75 balls in Guwahati and made him the third Indian after Tendulkar and Kohli to cross 12,000 ODI runs.

At 39, he remains a key part of India’s plans for the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. India open against Australia on 7 October 2027. See the full Cricket World Cup 2027 schedule.
