Early Life and Background
Gill was born in Fazilka, Punjab, into a farming family. His father noticed his talent early and built a practice pitch near their home, before the family moved to Mohali so that he could train in a proper academy. In an Inter-District Under-16 match for Mohali, he scored 351 runs and shared a record opening stand of 587 with Nirmal Singh.
His Under-19 form led straight to an IPL contract with Kolkata Knight Riders. In December 2018, he scored 268 against Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy, and finished the season as Punjab’s top run-scorer with 728 runs in five matches, which put him firmly in India’s plans.

Gill as Captain
Gill took over from Rohit Sharma as Test captain in May 2025. In his first series in England, India drew 2-2 and he scored 754 runs, then he led the side to a 2-0 sweep of the West Indies at home. In October 2025 he was also named ODI captain as the team started preparing for the 2027 World Cup.
He has led by example with the bat, and his 223* in Guwahati made him the first captain to score a double century in both Tests and ODIs.
