Early Life and Background
Bumrah was born in Ahmedabad. His father passed away when he was a child, and his mother, a school teacher, raised him. As a boy, he practised yorkers by bowling a tennis ball at a wall at home, an early start for a skill that would later make him the best death bowler in the world.
He played for Gujarat in domestic cricket, where talent scouts from Mumbai Indians noticed him, and he joined the franchise for the 2013 IPL season. His short run-up, hyper-extended elbow and slingy delivery looked strange but were hard to pick up, and he soon found his way into the India limited-overs side.

Bowling Style and Strengths
- Unique action: A short run-up, whippy arm and high release point make the ball hard to read.
- Yorkers: He can land the yorker almost at will, which is why he is so deadly in the last overs.
- New-ball threat: He swings the ball both ways early and gets breakthroughs in the powerplay.
- Variety: His slower balls, bouncers and cutters keep the batter guessing at every stage.
Over the years, his workload has been carefully managed after back injuries in 2022 and 2025. Selectors have rested him in some series, which is why he plays fewer matches than other bowlers of his stature.
Bumrah in the IPL
Bumrah has played for Mumbai Indians since 2013 and has won the IPL title with them multiple times, including in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. He is regarded as one of the best death bowlers in the history of the league. His best figures are 5/10 against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2022.
